My first experiments: many of these were done in Paint Tool SAI, while I still had the patience to dig out the ACER every time I wanted to paint. No such patience now, so I’ve moved onto different media… (: Red Castle, for example, was already done in Photoshop (30 minute spitpaint. The others took somewhat longer…)
“Bunte Träume” is the first in a series of illustrations I hope to make for my grandmother’s beautiful poetry. This poem, clearly inspired by the season, tells of an Easter Bunny caught in a bit of an awkward fix – in the middle of painting Easter eggs!
Was seh’ ich dort im grünen Gras,
ist das vielleicht der Osterhas’?
Was macht er da zur frühen Stund’,
und warum ist sein Fell so bunt?
Ich schleich ganz leis an ihn heran,
so leise, wie ich es nur kann.
Was glaubt ihr was ich da erblickt,
und was mein Auge so entzückt
Im Grase sitzt ein kleiner Has’,
Mit Eierkorb und grossem Fass.
Eifrig taucht er einen Pinsel,
in des Fasses Farbgerinnsel.
Ein Ei wird rot, ein andres blau,
er ist bedacht und sehr genau.
Legt sie dann sorgsam in ein Nest,
für’s brave Kind zum Osterfest.
Er hat geschafft die ganze Nacht,
mit kleinen Pfötchen viel vollbracht.
Und wenn er sich die Äuglein reibt,
spritzt Farbe auf sein Hasenkleid.
Ein Zweiglein unter meinen Füssen knickt,
das Hasenkind springt hoch, erschrickt —
Ich reib die Augen mir, was ist geschehen,
wo ist der bunte Has’, was hab’ ich da gesehn — ?
When I had my “Asian Phase”, I did a few yoga inspired portraits of a yoga-friend instructor of mine. Subsequently, my three daughters requested their own portraits … which were much harder to do. After all, as a painting mom you do not only seek to capture the looks of your children, but also their personality. This took some practice, but was getting easier with each consecutive attempt. The backgrounds of “Lotus”, “Bella” and “Blue Eyes” are inspired by Gustav Klimt’s work.
